Having grown up riding the streetcars, electric trolleys and buses in Cincinnati , I had a fascination with these vehicles. My uncle drove a trolley and my best friend’s father was a supervisor at Cincinnati Street Railway.

I applied as soon as I was old enough and was hired one month after my 21st birthday, September 1970. I loved driving the bus, no power steering but some had air-conditioning. We had 2-minute headways, so you had to stay right on schedule. We had flyers, express service, zones and pay as you get off service, so there was lots to do.

I made just over a dollar an hour and we charged a quarter to ride plus a nickel for the transfer.

After a little more than a year, Cincinnati Transit started to cut back service. Drivers were being laid off and Atlanta Transit was hiring. Under a special agreement, a group of us applied to Atlanta Transit and were accepted. I moved to Atlanta at 22 years old.
